A 14 year old North Vernon girl has returned home after leaving her home in the middle of the night last week to meet with a male subject who is believed to be an illegal alien. During the early stages of the investigation officers were able to retrieve a copy of an ID and address for the male subject from the Comfort Inn. A short time later officers were able to determine the ID and address were fictitious.
Officers of the North Vernon Police Department, working in conjunction with the Indiana State Police, the FBI, the US Attorney’s Office, Child Protection Services, and the Jennings County Prosecutors Office, conducted the investigation.
Using good old fashion police work in combination with high tech investigative techniques, law enforcement was able to track the young girl’s location to an apartment building in New York City. Once FBI Special Agents started knocking on doors and asking questions in the neighborhood, it didn’t take long for the male subject to put the runaway on a bus and send her back to Indiana.
Apparently, the two met on the social networking website My Space. The 14 year old, using her mother’s laptop computer, represented herself as a 19 year old. It is imperative for parents to take steps so they know what their children are doing on the internet.
