The North Vernon Police Department’s Canine Unit recently received a grant from Wal-mart Inc to purchase a bullet-proof vest for its canine officer, Blade. The grant was sought by Vest N’ PDP which is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide bullet and stab resistant vests for law enforcement agencies that could not normally afford them.

The bullet proof vests that are provided by this grant are custom made to fit each dog. This is a vast improvement over lesser quality adjustable vests that are heavier and inhibit the K-9’s movement. Unfortunately the vests are still far too heavy to be worn by working dogs for their entire shift as their human counterparts do; however these vests are worn during high risk situations such as building searches and the tracking of violent persons. This can greatly increase a K-9’s chances of survival.

The North Vernon Police Department would like to thank Wal-mart and Vest N’ PDP for their efforts to help protect our police K-9.
