North Vernon Man Arrested after Stabbing

Officers of the North Vernon Police Department have Arrested James Helton, 46, of North Vernon on a Preliminary Charge of Aggravated Battery (Class B Felony).
On July 5, 2008 at about 2:35am officers were dispatched to the alley in the area of 12 ½ 5th Street on a Report that Someone had been Stabbed. Officers arrived and discovered Charles Morgan, 24, also of North Vernon lying near the alley and being attended to by witnesses. They quickly identified the suspect as Helton and officers were able to locate him within a few minutes at a nearby apartment. Helton was taken into custody without incident.
According to witnesses there was a verbal disagreement between Helton and Morgan. This disagreement escalated to the point where Helton pulled out a knife and cut Morgan across the abdomen. Helton then fled to a nearby apartment.
Morgan was transported to St Vincent Jennings Hospital by Rescue 20 and then transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he is underwent surgery.

Helton is being held in the Jennings County Jail on a $75,500 bond.
