Melissa A. Estes, 36, of North Vernon was stopped on Henry Street for driving left of center. During the traffic stop, officers detected signs of impairment and offered Ms. Estes the opportunity to submit to field sobriety testing and a certified chemical test. During the DUI investigation, Ms. Estes was asked to exit the vehicle. Ms. Estes exited the vehicle but left the window down and the engine running. Ms. Estes was advised that she would need to be transported to the police department for further investigation. Ms. Estes got back into her vehicle, shifted it into gear and fled from the scene. Ms. Estes drove through several yards, driveways, and parking lots, nearly striking a police vehicle on one occasion, in the area of Brookside Estates as she fled from pursuing officers. Officers pursued Ms. Estes out of the city westbound on Hurley Drive. Officers lost sight of Ms. Estes' vehicle in the area of County Road 175 North at County Road 600 West. A short time later, Ms. Estes' vehicle was located wrecked and abandoned on County Road 150 North west of County Road 600 West. Officers recovered several of Ms. Estes' personal belongings from the vehicle but were unable to locate Ms. Estes. Ms. Estes faces numerous Felony and Misdemeanor criminal charges including: D-Felony Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with a prior Conviction, D-Felony Resisting Law Enforcement using a Vehicle, D-Felony Criminal Recklessness in a Vehicle, and A-Misdemeanor Reckless Driving.
