On the evening of July 19 officers of the North Vernon Police Department stopped a suspicious vehicle in Hillcrest Cemetery on 4th Street that was occupied by Peter Torgersen and a female driver. An investigation revealed a large amount of copper wire that was obviously stolen. Also discovered in the car were tools commonly used in thefts and burglaries as well as a pair of walkie talkies and head-mounted flashlights.

During an interview with Mr. Torgensen it was determined that some of the wire was stolen from the construction site of the new City Garage and we learned the theft had occurred less than ten minutes before they were stopped by North Vernon officers. Other wire is believed to have been stolen from Decatur County; that investigation in ongoing. Officers involved in this investigation are:   Ofc. Randel Miller, Ofc. Jason Allen, Ofc. Craig Kipper, and Det. Brian Taylor.

North Vernon Assistant Police Chief Jack Hatton warns all local residents and businesses that, due to the high value of scrap metals such as copper and aluminum, such thefts have become more common recently and that people should take extra steps to prevent becoming a victim of such a crime.
