Fireworks Malfunction Causes Injuries

On July 4th, during the fireworks show at the North Vernon City Park, one of the devices exploded over the parking lot directly behind the National Guard Armory. There were several spectators in the area watching the display from approximately 125 - 150 yards away.

Towards the end of the display some officers saw the device explode close to the spectators and ran to the area to check for injuries. According to officers and witnesses the device exploded approximately 15 - 20 feet above the ground.

There were several people complaining of pain and ringing in their ears and two spectators had burns, one to the leg and the other on the back. Rescue 20 arrived and checked the individuals who complained of injuries; however, no one was transported to the hospital by Rescue 20.

Also assisting were the Center Township Volunteer Fire Department First Responders.
