Community Policing:
FOOT & BIKE PATROL
Foot and Bike Patrol Units benefit the community by providing a visible presence in downtown areas and in parks and playgrounds. Because they are more physically available and approachable, our officers can give information and immediate assistance as necessary within downtown North Vernon.
Foot and Bike Patrol Units are valuable resources because they allow the flexibility to quickly access areas that police cruisers cannot.
Bike Patrol officers are encouraged to work closely with business owners and residents to help find solutions to problems specific to the downtown area.
Children more easily relate to our Foot and Bike Patrol officers which helps the community by getting children more involved in community spirit at an early age. Our Bicycle Safety programs also help keep residents safe.
Downtown North Vernon attracts large crowds of local residents and tourists during the annual Railroad Days Festival and the Labor Day Antique Sales and Garage Sales. The bikes provide speed and mobility through crowded streets and normally allow our officers a view over the crowd and most vehicles.
Bike Patrol officers ride heavy-duty mountain bikes that are strong enough to withstand being ridden day after day through inclement weather and even over curbs, down stairs, and along railroad tracks. We currently have two bicycles.
